The fall of the Berlin Wall 20 years ago was welcomed and celebrated by many. But for many the end of the GDR meant also meant uncertainty and fear. An ideology collapsed – and with it many of the old values. All East Germans experienced this dramatic shift and the integration into the Federal Republic of Germany. But what about the 90 000 contract workers who had been sent to the GDR by their socialist home countries? We visited Joao Fortuna from Mozambique who stayed in reunified Germany and who is now claiming his rights.
